Plan your care

Find a hernia specialist

Not every general surgeon is a hernia specialist. Use this checklist to evaluate whether a surgeon is the right fit for your case — whether you choose our program or another.

What to look for

  • Board certification in general surgery (verify with your national registry).
  • Volume — how many hernia repairs do they perform per year? Higher-volume surgeons and centers tend to have lower complication and recurrence rates.
  • Technique breadth — can they offer open, laparoscopic, and robotic approaches? A surgeon limited to one technique may not match every patient.
  • Complex-case experience — recurrent, giant, and loss-of-domain hernias should be handled by surgeons who see them regularly.
  • Transparent outcomes — willingness to discuss their recurrence and complication rates.

Questions to ask at consultation

  1. How many of my specific hernia type do you repair per year?
  2. What technique do you recommend for me and why?
  3. Will you use mesh? What kind and why?
  4. What is your recurrence rate for this type of repair?
  5. Who covers post-op if I have complications after I go home?
