Plan your care
Find a hernia specialist
Not every general surgeon is a hernia specialist. Use this checklist to evaluate whether a surgeon is the right fit for your case — whether you choose our program or another.
What to look for
- Board certification in general surgery (verify with your national registry).
- Volume — how many hernia repairs do they perform per year? Higher-volume surgeons and centers tend to have lower complication and recurrence rates.
- Technique breadth — can they offer open, laparoscopic, and robotic approaches? A surgeon limited to one technique may not match every patient.
- Complex-case experience — recurrent, giant, and loss-of-domain hernias should be handled by surgeons who see them regularly.
- Transparent outcomes — willingness to discuss their recurrence and complication rates.
Questions to ask at consultation
- How many of my specific hernia type do you repair per year?
- What technique do you recommend for me and why?
- Will you use mesh? What kind and why?
- What is your recurrence rate for this type of repair?
- Who covers post-op if I have complications after I go home?
